Solar Heating Panel – The Building Block of Alternative Energy

Using an electric heating system or lighting a fire used to be the only options that people had for heating their homes but today, there is a new method that is quickly growing in popularity — the use of solar heating panels. For many homeowners these days, the solar panel provides the perfect solution to their heating needs.

What is a Solar Heating Panel?

In order to understand why this piece of equipment is so vital in providing alternative energy, we must first understand what a solar heating panel is. Basically, it is the device that collects the sun’s energy and uses this energy to take care of a home or building’s heating needs. Today, solar panels are becoming quite popular, especially in sunny areas of the United States and Europe.

Typically looking like a plain sheet of black glass, a solar panel is made up of hundreds of solar cells and solar thermal collectors, each of which is capable of capturing the sun’s rays and converting them to energy that can be used to heat the air and water supply of a building.

Solar heating panels are sometimes confused with solar photovoltaic panels, which are much more powerful devices that can convert the sun’s rays into alternative energy for use with any electrical appliance in the house. The solar heating panels, on the other hand, are used mainly for heating purposes.

In order to get the best results from a solar heating panel, you should install it in a part of the roof that gets the most amount of sunlight during the day. As long as the sun shines down on the panel, the individual thermal collectors will continue to work, collecting the solar energy and directing it to metal tubes that lead to the interior of the house. These tubes bring the collected solar energy to water tanks, usually located in the basement of the house, where the heat is stored until it is needed.

When solar heating systems were first introduced, the panels used for collecting heat were usually made of silicon, a brittle, non-metallic element that is able to conduct heat quite efficiently. However, silicon costs began to rise, which led the manufacturers of solar heating panels to look for an alternative material to use. Today, most panels are made from plastic, which turns out to work just as well as silicon but is much more accessible and costs much less.
